German Porcelain Giant BHS Tabletop AG Unveils $13 Million African Manufacturing Hub in Tunisia

The 200-year-old Bavarian premium porcelain manufacturer selects Tunisia for its first-ever industrial facility on the continent, creating over 500 jobs in North Africa

German premium porcelain manufacturer BHS Tabletop AG has announced a landmark investment of nearly 40 million Tunisian dinars (approximately $13 million) to establish its first production facility on African soil, marking a significant milestone in the company’s two-century history.

The strategic expansion was formally presented on Tuesday, July 21, during a high-level meeting between Tunisian Minister of Public Works and Housing Salah Zouari—who also serves as acting Minister of Industry, Mines and Energy—and BHS Tabletop CEO Jens Becker, alongside senior ministry officials.

500 Jobs and 2028 Target Date

According to Tunisian authorities, the initial phase of the project is expected to generate more than 500 employment opportunities, delivering a substantial boost to the local economy. The ministry has committed to coordinating with all relevant government agencies to ensure the project’s smooth development, with commercial production slated to commence in 2028.

While the Tunisian government has pledged full support for the initiative, officials have not disclosed specific details regarding construction timelines, the factory’s precise location, or potential future expansion phases.

A 200-Year Legacy Crosses the Mediterranean

Founded in 1814 in Selb, Bavaria, BHS Tabletop stands as one of Germany’s most distinguished manufacturers of high-end porcelain tableware. The company’s prestigious brand portfolio includes Bauscher, Schönwald, PLAYGROUND, and HEPP—names synonymous with quality in the premium hospitality sector.

Currently producing more than 20 million pieces annually and exporting to 140 countries, the group has built a formidable reputation serving the hotel, restaurant, and café (HoReCa) sectors, as well as healthcare institutions and luxury cruise lines. Beyond porcelain, the company’s comprehensive product range encompasses cutlery, table accessories, and professional catering solutions.

Strategic African First

With an established commercial network spanning Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia—including dedicated teams for Middle East and Africa (MEA) markets—BHS Tabletop has maintained a robust international presence. However, the Tunisian project represents uncharted territory: if executed as planned, it will mark the group’s first manufacturing footprint on the African continent.

The company, which employs between 1,000 and 5,000 people globally, generates annual revenues of approximately $167 million, according to industry estimates.
