Four photovoltaic solar power stations, each with a capacity of two megawatts, have gone into operation in the southeastern governorate of Medenine.
The total cost of the projects reached $5.5 million, according to Tunis Afrique Presse news agency. Officials expect the new plants to reduce electricity generation expenses by roughly $518,000 and slash natural gas imports by about $1.5 million annually.
The initiative is part of Tunisia’s national energy strategy, which seeks to raise the share of electricity generated from renewable sources to 35% by 2030 and to 50% by 2035.
Secretary of State for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane said the stations would enhance the region’s energy mix, stimulate economic and social development, ensure a stable power supply, and help modernise the electricity grid to meet climate challenges.
