Around 300 students from the University of Sfax have made history by setting a new Guinness World Record, creating a fully functional artificial intelligence (AI) startup from scratch in under three hours. The feat, which took place on April 18, 2026, demonstrates the growing technological and entrepreneurial dynamism of Tunisian youth.
The event, dubbed the “Sfax Startup Sprint,” challenged students to turn an initial idea into a viable business. In just 180 minutes, the participants developed AgriSmart TN, an AI-powered platform dedicated to agricultural optimization.
A Sprint from Idea to Implementation
Using cutting-edge tools like ChatGPT, Gemini 2.0, and Midjourney for code and image generation, the teams produced a comprehensive array of deliverables, including an in-depth market study, a complete business plan, legal documents, financial models, and an investor pitch. According to the university’s official statement, the project was completed entirely “from the brainstorming phase to the technical and legal launch of the platform.” The university stated that a total of 42 deliverables were produced during the session.
A Global Platform for Tunisian Talent
University of Sfax President Hassen Mnif described the achievement as a “great honor” and a “remarkable achievement.” In an interview with RTCI, he highlighted the event’s significance, noting that the university’s entry into such an international platform offers crucial global media visibility. He argued that this recognition proves that young Tunisians are capable of impacting society and proposing innovative solutions to complex challenges, including the problem of unemployment.
Beyond the technical performance, Mnif emphasized that AI is now an “essential tool” that should serve as a lever to improve the employability of graduates and effectively meet current socio-economic needs.
The Power of Collective Intelligence
The event brought together students from various disciplines from across Tunisia. Observers and the jury praised the “meticulous coordination” of the 300 future engineers and managers, describing the achievement as a demonstration of “collective intelligence.”
The University of Sfax, ranked number one in Tunisia by the 2025 Shanghai Academic Ranking, has positioned this event as more than a mere record attempt. The university’s official statement described it as a “showcase for international investors” of Tunisia’s technological potential.
Looking Ahead
While the event does not yet appear on the official Guinness World Records website—validation can take several weeks or months—the energy and attention it has generated are undeniable. The initiative aligns with a global trend where universities and nations use record attempts to showcase the AI and tech skills of their youth, placing Tunisia on the map alongside countries like Saudi Arabia and India that have recently organized massive tech events.
This success demonstrates the ability of Tunisian youth to harness cutting-edge technologies to transform abstract concepts into concrete and viable projects, sending a strong signal to international investors about the country’s technological potential.
