Tunisia is emerging as a key destination for Chinese investment in North Africa, with 22 firms now operating in the country, according to an official announcement made on October 23. This growing partnership, bolstered by high-level diplomatic engagement, has already generated significant economic benefits for Tunisia.
The Tunisian Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (FIPA-Tunisia) disclosed that these companies have contributed more than 31 million Tunisian dinars in foreign direct investment and are responsible for creating around 1,100 jobs.
The data was released after a meeting between FIPA Director General Jalel Tebib and a senior Chinese delegate, Li Shijie. Their talks focused on future collaboration in strategic sectors such as automotive, infrastructure, green energy, and tourism.
“Tunisia is rolling out the red carpet for Chinese investment,” said FIPA’s Tebib, underscoring the country’s openness. Li, in turn, cited Tunisia’s skilled labour force and strategic position as major draws for Chinese businesses.
The mutual commitment to enhance ties under China’s Belt and Road Initiative signals a strategic pivot, positioning Tunisia as a burgeoning industrial and commercial gateway for Beijing into the North African and Mediterranean markets.
