Tunisia Engages in High-Level Diplomacy at Russia-Africa Summit in Cairo

On the sidelines of the Second Russia–Africa Ministerial Conference, Foreign Minister Mohamed Ali Nafti conducted a series of strategic bilateral meetings, focusing on regional solidarity and economic partnerships.

The conference, hosted in the Egyptian capital, served as a platform for Nafti to reinforce Tunisia’s key alliances. In consecutive talks with his Egyptian and Algerian counterparts, the minister underscored a shared commitment to turning diplomatic agreements into concrete action.

Strengthening Regional Ties
Minister Nafti met with Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Dr. Badr Abdelatty, and Algeria’s Foreign Minister, Ahmed Attaf. Discussions centered on accelerating the implementation of decisions from recent high-level joint committees held in Cairo and Tunis. All parties highlighted the critical role of the Tripartite Consultation Mechanism between Tunisia, Algeria, and Egypt, announcing that Tunisia will host the forum’s next session.

A unified stance on Libya also emerged from the talks. The ministers emphasized the necessity of a “Libyan–Libyan political solution,” achieved through consensus and supported by the United Nations.

Advancing Economic Cooperation with Russia
In a significant meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, the dialogue turned to tangible economic collaboration. Both officials agreed on the urgency to advance projects agreed upon at the Intergovernmental Joint Committee in Moscow last November. Key sectors identified for progress include trade, energy, transport, and education. The talks set the stage for the committee’s next session, scheduled to be held in Tunisia in 2026.

Planning Future Bilateral Steps with Mauritania
Further broadening the diplomatic outreach, Minister Nafti consulted with Mauritania’s Foreign Minister, Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug. They agreed on thorough preparations for upcoming bilateral engagements in the first half of 2026. A primary focus will be on enhancing trade and revitalizing stalled joint investment projects.

The meetings positions Tunisia as an active participant in both African and international fora, seeking to leverage diplomacy for enhanced regional stability and economic growth.
