The Swiss Embassy in Tunisia has officially launched a year-long series of celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Swiss Confederation and the Republic of Tunisia.
Since establishing ties in 1956, Switzerland and Tunisia have cultivated a rich partnership rooted in dialogue, cooperation, and shared values. The commemorative year will spotlight the depth and diversity of these bonds across historical, cultural, economic, and scientific fronts, the embassy announced.
A Landmark Historical Publication
To mark the occasion, an unprecedented historical volume has been published tracing key milestones in the bilateral relationship. The book also honors Swiss figures who have left a lasting mark on Tunisia’s history and cultural landscape.
Written by Tunisian historian, architect, and urban planner Adnen el Ghali, the work serves as a historical testament to the longstanding ties uniting the two nations. It emphasizes the deeply human dimension that characterizes interactions between Swiss and Tunisian men and women across all fields of dialogue and creativity.
Among the personalities featured are renowned architect Le Corbusier; painters Paul Klee and Paul Moilliet, Henri Dunant, founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross – and sculptor Alberto Giacometti. Their journeys, the embassy noted, reflect the wealth of human and cultural exchanges between Switzerland and Tunisia.
Year-Long Program of Events
Throughout 2026, a series of events will be organized across Tunisia, including exhibitions, conferences, film screenings, artistic gatherings, and academic initiatives – all designed to showcase the vitality of this cooperation and further strengthen bilateral ties.
“Through this celebration, we wish not only to pay tribute to 70 years of fruitful relations but also to highlight a lasting partnership where history and present-day cooperation echo and reinforce one another,” the Swiss Embassy said in a statement.
