On India’s 79th Independence Day, the country’s ambassador to Tunisia, Dr. Devyani Khobragade, highlighted India’s transformation into a global economic and diplomatic power, crediting inclusive growth, strong reforms, climate-conscious policies, and pioneering digital infrastructure for this rise. She noted India’s role as a leading advocate for the Global South, guided by the ethos of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (“the world is one family”), and recalled key initiatives such as Vaccine Maitri, the International Solar Alliance, and the Global Biofuels Alliance.**
Reflecting on India’s G20 presidency in 2023, she underlined its significance as the first by a South Asian nation, amplifying the concerns of developing countries and securing milestones like the African Union’s inclusion as a permanent member. The ambassador also cited India’s advances in maritime strategy, space exploration, and counter-terrorism, alongside its continued support for Palestine and South-South cooperation.
Turning to Tunisia, Dr. Khobragade emphasized a relationship dating back to 1958, shaped by shared values and cooperation in areas such as capacity building, renewable energy, ICT, and infrastructure. She pointed to joint ventures in phosphate production, grassroots development projects, and Tunisia’s participation in global sustainability and equity forums as signs of deepening ties. Looking ahead, she reaffirmed India’s commitment to advancing a future-oriented partnership with Tunisia, anchored in mutual respect, sustainable growth, and a shared vision for an inclusive global order.
