Chinese Consortium Wins TND 520.8m Contract to Rebuild Tunisia’s El Menzah Olympic Stadium

A consortium of China CAMC Engineering (CAMCE) and China Railway Construction Engineering Group (CRCEG) has won a contract to deliver a new stadium at the Stade Olympique d’El Menzah site in Tunis, Tunisia.

The existing stadium, located at the El Menzah National Sports Complex in the Tunisian capital, opened in 1967 for Tunis’ hosting of that year’s Mediterranean Games but has been out of action since 2019.

Under the contract, the consortium will demolish and clear existing stadium facilities before building a new Olympic stadium with a capacity of 40,000 spectators. The scope covers design, procurement, construction, commissioning, and training services.

The contract was awarded by Tunisia’s Ministry of Equipment and Housing and Ministry of Youth and Sports, which are responsible for the construction and management of sports facilities in the North African country. It is valued at TND 520,812,962.19 (£127.3m/€152.4m/$171.2m).

The project has an intended duration of 40 months, with work expected to begin in early 2027. CRCEG is the lead member of the consortium with a 50% share, while CAMCE also holds 50%.

CAMCE described the Stade Olympique d’El Menzah regeneration as a “landmark initiative” in China-Tunisia cooperation in sports infrastructure. The company said executing the contract will help it consolidate and deepen its professional strengths in stadium construction and expand its market share in countries participating in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
