Algeria and Tunisia Seal Digital Cooperation Deals in Tunis

A working visit by Algeria’s Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, to the Tunisian capital has wrapped up with a raft of concrete agreements, signaling a new phase in cross-border digital and postal collaboration.

Accompanied by senior officials, experts, and heads of key sector institutions, Zerrouki co-chaired the fourth session of the Algeria–Tunisia Joint Technical Committee for Cooperation alongside Tunisia’s Minister of Communication Technologies, Sofiene Hemissi. The session gave fresh momentum to a bilateral agreement focused on postal services and information and communication technologies, with an emphasis on joint projects targeting border region development and narrowing the digital divide.

The talks were organized into five specialized working groups, each tackling a distinct pillar of cooperation: telecommunications infrastructure and IT, spectrum management, postal exchanges between Algérie Poste and Tunisian Post, tech hubs and entrepreneurship, and the broader expansion of bilateral partnerships.

By the session’s close, the two ministers had approved several priority projects and recommendations. Chief among them:

  • A shared commitment to modernize the existing terrestrial link between Algeria and Tunisia and to assess the feasibility of a new joint submarine cable connecting to Italy.
  • An agreement to explore preferential mobile roaming rates and deploy satellite-based IoT solutions.
  • The creation of a joint task force tasked with coordinating mobile networks and mitigating radio interference along border zones.
  • Closer alignment in the run-up to the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) 2027.
  • The issuance of co-branded postage stamps celebrating the historical, cultural, and touristic heritage of both nations.
  • Upgraded postal transit infrastructure to meet the demands of expanding e-commerce.
  • A bilateral electronic data exchange system alongside a unified postal money transfer mechanism.

On the entrepreneurship front, the two sides launched practical measures including institutional twinning, startup support programs, and incubation and acceleration schemes. Research, development, and innovation cooperation within international frameworks also featured prominently.

Speaking after the meeting, Minister Zerrouki reiterated Algeria’s determination to broaden and sustain bilateral cooperation. He stressed that the latest steps are designed to deepen integration between the two neighbors and unlock promising partnership opportunities that serve their shared interests and the aspirations of their peoples.
