With its blend of culture, mild climate, and competitive pricing, the Tunisian island is capturing the attention of British sun-seekers looking for an alternative to the Canaries.
Tunisia’s island of Djerba is rapidly being positioned as the next sought-after winter sun destination for British travellers. Promoted as a refreshing alternative, Djerba offers a unique combination of relaxation and authenticity that is drawing interest from major tour operators and tourists alike Travel And Tour World said.
While traditional hotspots like the Canary Islands and Sharm el-Sheikh remain popular, Djerba provides a distinct experience with its white-sand beaches, vibrant café culture, and authentic Berber villages. Though its winter climate is more temperate—with average January temperatures around 16°C—the island compensates with its rich cultural offerings and picturesque settings, the same source added.
The growing demand has not gone unnoticed by the travel industry. Leading UK tour operators TUI and easyJet Holidays have begun featuring Djerba prominently, introducing direct flights from Luton and Manchester starting in November 2024. Package prices are reported to be highly competitive, comparable to those for similar hotels in the Canary Islands, making the destination an accessible and compelling alternative.
This strategic push is already yielding significant results. A notable increase in flight capacity, including easyJet’s operations of up to 42 weekly flights to Tunisia, contributed to a remarkable 40% surge in British visitors to the country in 2025. This growth propelled the UK past Germany to become Tunisia’s second-largest European market, with over 395,000 British tourists visiting in the first ten months of the year alone. France retains the top position, Travel And Tour World noted.
In a move to cement this momentum, easyJet Holidays organized a familiarization trip for travel agents to Djerba in October 2025, with plans for further trips to continue promoting the island’s appeal. As travellers increasingly seek out new experiences beyond the well-trodden path, Djerba is poised to become a mainstay on the winter sun map.
