Tunisia Sees 35% Surge in Women’s Participation in Digital Economy

Tunisia is witnessing a significant transformation in its economic landscape, with women’s participation in digital activities recording a notable 35% increase over the past five years. The announcement was made by Fatma Thabet Chiboub, Tunisia’s Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, during her address at the opening of the International Council for Women Entrepreneurs Congress.

Minister Chiboub revealed that women are now at the forefront of the country’s entrepreneurial drive, co-founding 40% of all startups established since 2020. This growth is underpinned by strong educational achievements, where women constitute 60% of university graduates and an impressive 72% in some industrial technology engineering programs.

This shifting demographic is progressively influencing corporate leadership structures. Currently, 25% of Tunisian companies are led by women, a figure that surpasses the regional average of 16%. The industrial sector now includes 500 women-led firms, with female leadership exceeding 30% in strategic segments such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, medical devices, and technical textiles.

Further solidifying this trend, women account for 42% of the workforce in several strategic industrial segments and represent 30% of newly recruited engineers in the sector, signaling a sustained integration of female talent into the core of Tunisia’s industrial and digital future.
