Tunisia prepares for the return of Algerian tourists

Before the health crisis, Algerian tourists crossed the land border with Tunisia by millions. They represented one-third of foreign tourists.

The movement of people between the two countries was prevented for many months by the closure of the borders. Air links resumed in June 2021, before being reinforced twice. Currently, 14 flights per week are scheduled between Algeria and Tunisia, with Air Algérie and Tunisair each operating one flight per day.

The land borders were partially reopened in January 2022. Only two border posts were reopened to a restricted public. They are the post of Oum Tboul in the wilaya of El Tarf and that of Taleb Larbi in the wilaya of El Oued in Algeria.

In fact, the two border posts open during the day on weekdays exclusively for citizens resident in both countries (Algerians resident in Tunisia and Tunisians resident in Algeria).

Tourists are not yet concerned by the reopening, but on the Tunisian side, they are preparing for their return for the next summer season.

According to Mosaïque FM, a working session brought together the Tunisian Ministers of Transport and Tourism as well as the director of Tunisian customs to review the logistical preparation of the summer tourist season and to ensure good conditions for the arrival of Algerian tourists at the various border posts.

It was also discussed the Duty-Free shopping centre located at the Tunisian border post of Meloula which is of great importance given the large number of Algerian tourists who pass through it to enter Tunisia.
