Tunisia in Talks with China’s Huawei to Digitally Revamp Transport Infrastructure

Tunisia is exploring deepened cooperation with Chinese technology giant Huawei in smart transportation solutions. The discussions signal Tunisia’s push to harness digital innovation for its ports, airports, and railways.

The talks were held during a meeting on Monday between Transport Minister Rachid Amri and a high-level Huawei delegation. The session, attended by senior ministry officials, focused on leveraging digital systems to enhance service quality, productivity, and safety across a sector grappling with structural challenges.

Minister Amri underscored the “solidity” of Tunisian-Chinese relations and a shared commitment to elevate bilateral partnership. He emphasized the strategic priority of adopting successful international models for digitizing ports, airports, border crossings, and road-rail networks.

“Huawei presented its portfolio of integrated digital solutions for intelligent transport,” a ministry readout noted. The Chinese side expressed interest in forging partnerships centered on expertise exchange and supporting Tunisia’s digitalization projects in the sector.

Tunisian officials outlined ongoing and planned smart transport initiatives, framing the efforts as part of a “progressive modernization” drive within the national regulatory framework.

While the meeting concluded without a formal agreement, it highlights the growing interest of major Chinese tech firms in the Tunisian market. It also reignites public discourse on the critical role of digital technology in overhauling the nation’s transport and logistics infrastructure.
