Tunisia announced its ratification of an agreement to establish a mechanism for consultation on shared groundwater in the northern desert, with Libya and Algeria, pursuant to a decision published in the Official Gazette of Tunisia, the Libya Observer reports.
This ratification comes after a series of meetings and summits that have stressed the need for cooperation on this issue, as Algeria witnessed in April 2024 tripartite meetings that included the ministers of agriculture from Tunisia, Libya and Algeria, where the groundwater issue in the northern desert was at the top of the agenda, the same source adds.
The summit attended by the Head of the Presidential Council, Mohammed Menfi, with Tunisian President Kais Saied, and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in April 2024 in Tunisia resulted in an agreement to “form a joint working group to formulate mechanisms for establishing major joint projects and investments and to accelerate the activation of the joint mechanism for exploiting shared groundwater in the northern desert”.
The agreement, which was signed in Algeria on April 24, 2024, stipulates the establishment of a mechanism for consultation by the three countries, and consists of two chapters: the first is related to ratification of the agreement, and the second to its publication in the Official Gazette.
