Tunisia Accelerates Digital Healthcare Overhaul with Focus on Sovereignty and Access

The Ministry of Health is forging a strategic partnership with Tunisia’s leading telecommunications provider to fast-track the digitalization of medical services, officials announced Tuesday.

The high-level meeting on February 9 between Health Minister Dr. Mustapha Ferjani and Lassaad Ben Dhiab Chief Executive Officer At TunisieTelecom marks a concerted push to leverage technology for improving care quality and citizen access. The collaboration signals a new phase in the country’s healthcare reform agenda.

A central pillar of the plan is the widespread deployment of high-speed internet across health facilities, with an emphasis on primary care centers. Officials state this infrastructure is critical for enabling real-time data exchange, expanding telemedicine, and improving responsiveness at the frontline of service delivery.

In a decisive step for data security, the ministry committed to migrating national health information systems exclusively to Tunisian cloud solutions. This move aims to ensure digital sovereignty, giving the state full control over sensitive patient data while enhancing privacy and security protocols.

Artificial intelligence is also set to play a key role. The ministry plans to deploy AI tools to analyze system performance, support clinical and administrative decision-making, and optimize service quality across the network.

Further bridging the gap with citizens, a new digital call center will be established to streamline communication between the public and health authorities. The center is designed to provide faster guidance, manage inquiries, and facilitate access to information.

“This partnership with Tunisia Telecom, a leading public institution, provides essential technical support to propel our Digital Hospital Project forward,” said Dr. Al-Furjani following the meeting. He emphasized that the goal is to translate technological investment into “faster, more efficient, and citizen-centered healthcare.”

The initiatives reflect a broader ambition to build a resilient, self-reliant digital health infrastructure that can improve system-wide efficiency and bring services closer to every citizen.
