The Locarno International Film Festival has officially selected “The Birthday Party”, directed by Miguel Ángel Jiménez, for its 78th edition.
The film will have its world premiere on August 7 in the festival’s main section, Piazza Grande, held in the town’s iconic open-air square that accommodates up to 8,000 viewers.

Set in the late 1970s somewhere in the Mediterranean, the story follows wealthy Greek businessman Markos Timoleon—a character reminiscent of Aristotle Onassis—who throws a lavish 25th birthday party for his daughter on his private island. Markos is used to absolute control over everything and everyone around him, no matter the cost. Unbeknownst to his guests, he’s secretly planning a major decision concerning his daughter. As the evening unfolds and the party grows more chaotic, a confrontation between Markos and his daughter Sofia escalates, culminating in a shocking finale that shakes his dominance and identity to the core.
The film is produced by Heretic and will be distributed worldwide by Heretic and Bankside Films. The cast is led by four-time Academy Award nominee Willem Dafoe, BAFTA-nominated actor Joe Cole, and acclaimed Spanish actress Emma Suárez.
The ensemble also features Vic Carmen Sonne, Carlos Cuevas, Christos Stergioglou, Antonis Tsiotsiopoulos, Billie Hakila, Francesc Garrido, Maria Pau Pigem, and Elsa Lekakou.
“The Birthday Party” was co-written by Miguel Ángel Jiménez and Yorgos Karnavas, based on the 2007 novel of the same name by Panos Karnezis. The film is a co-production between Greece, Spain, the Netherlands, and the UK, and was shot on location in Corfu and Athens.
