New Shipping Route to Boost Tunisian Date Exports to European Markets

CMA CGM launches a dedicated Mediterranean service linking Sfax, Tanger Med, and Valencia, providing a critical logistics bridge for North African agricultural trade.

French shipping giant CMA CGM announced Friday the launch of a new weekly shipping service connecting Tunisia, Morocco, and Spain. The route is set to provide a major boost to Tunisian exporters, particularly for the nation’s vital date industry, by offering faster and more reliable access to European and global markets.

The new short-sea line will directly link the port of Sfax in Tunisia—a key agricultural export hub—with Tanger Med in Morocco and Valencia, Spain. The first vessel is scheduled to depart from Sfax on October 29, 2025, aligning with the start of the 2025–2026 Tunisian date export season.

Operated by CMA CGM’s Short Sea Lines Division, the service will follow a weekly rotation of Sfax–Tanger–Valencia–Sfax.

“This new service integrates Tunisia more closely into our Mediterranean logistics network, delivering a fast and dependable shipping solution,” a CMA CGM representative stated. The company emphasized that the route will help sustain the country’s agricultural exports while enhancing trade flows between North Africa and Southern Europe.

The connection is designed to streamline supply chains for perishable goods. From the major transshipment hubs at Tanger Med and Valencia CSP, Tunisian exports will gain direct connections to global destinations for both dry and refrigerated cargo. Additionally, the company confirmed a dedicated link to Casablanca will be available via its existing Morocco Shuttle (MOSHT) service.

The initiative is expected to strengthen economic ties across the Mediterranean and provide a timely infrastructure upgrade for Tunisia’s key agricultural sector.
