Indian government raises Tunisia’s quota for the program to 100 per year
On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation Program (ITEC), held under the theme “Sharing experiences and networking among ITEC alumni”, the Indian Embassy in Tunis hosted an Iftar dinner in honor of those who benefited from this program, including government officials, media professionals and civil society organizations.
Ambassador of India to Tunisia, Dr. Devyani Uttam Khobragade, highlighted the strong relationship between the program and Tunisia, as more than 700 government officials have benefited so far, in various fields, and even during the Corona pandemic, the program continued to operate by providing remote training to 200 people.
The ambassador added that due to the good results achieved by the program with Tunisia, the Indian government decided to increase the number of beneficiaries to 100 per year, but the year 2023/2024 only saw the participation of 62 people, calling on the various Tunisian ministries to take advantage of the training opportunities provided by this program for their executives and employees.
She pointed out that her country also offers scholarships within programs dedicated to the African continent, such as the Indian scholarship program dedicated to Africa, and the “RAMAT” scholarship, which promotes academic cooperation and has benefited a number of university professors.
Khobragade pointed out that the ITEC program, created by India in 1964, today covers the continents of Asia, Europe, Africa, North and Latin America, and Oceania and has provided training to more than 225,000 people, making it one of the oldest and most successful international cooperation programs and embodying the philosophy behind India’s policy “Vasudak Kutumbakam” meaning “the world is one family”.
The program covers many fields and sectors such as information technology, digital security, renewable energies, economics, finance, management, administration, banking, rural development, and crime research, and artificial intelligence has been added in line with global transformations.
Ambassador Khobragade said that ITEC is not just a skills development and vocational training program, but a window through which the trainee discovers India’s rich and diverse cultural heritage, ancient traditions, diverse geography, and beautiful nature.
