Field works for 2024 General Population Census announced

-The launch of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census, the 13th census that Tunisia has experienced since independence, was announced on Tuesday at the berges du Lac.

During a press conference attended by a large number of representatives of public authorities and media professionals, the Minister of Economy and Planning pointed out that the night between 5 and 6 November is the reference night for the 2024 general population and housing census, which starts on Wednesday November 6 and continues until the end of December of this year, allowing the coverage of all regions of the country.

He added that modern techniques and scientific methodology have been adopted to ensure obtaining reliable data and data to be used in designing national policies and strategies for sustainable development and directing resources according to the specificities of development to meet the needs of citizens and enhance the quality of life in accordance with a bottom-up approach and vertical construction in line with the general methodology of strategic planning.

He emphasised that census workers have undergone comprehensive training to ensure that the data is collected accurately while maintaining its confidentiality, as it will be made available for purely statistical and research purposes.

The minister underlined that the success of the census depends on citizen engagement and its importance, calling for broad national participation and effective citizen engagement in the census process.

For his part, the Director General of the National Institute of Statistics (INS) Bouzid Nassiri reviewed the various stages of the 2024 General Population and Housing Census, recalling the end of the preliminary process, which started on May 20 and ended at the end of September, adding that after the end of the census process, which starts tomorrow, Wednesday, and ends at the end of December, the data processing process will begin, and the overall results will be announced on March 30, 2025, and the final detailed results will be announced on September 30, next year. It is then made available to policymakers, decision-makers, researchers and others who need it.

To carry out this operation, 106440 personnel, as well as logistical equipment and secure digital boards, were deployed, he said, adopting a sophisticated digital application and a geographic information system (GIS) to facilitate data collection and analysis in an accurate and rapid manner.

Regarding the confidentiality of data, he stressed that apart from the adopted legislative framework, census officers have been trained to attach great importance to the confidentiality of data, adding that the digital panels are secured and the information is encrypted, as well as the special distributors (Tunisie Telecom) for data messaging between the digital panel and the institute are protected and encrypted.

With regard to the migrants that Tunisia has received in recent times, especially from sub-Saharan Africa, Nasiri stressed that all relevant structures and civil society organisations have been coordinated to conduct a census, according to a guaranteed methodology.
