The Tunisian island of Djerba is turning to innovation to renew its tourist appeal and strengthen its positioning as a sustainable and authentic destination. This strategy has seen the launch of the Tunisia Tourism Lab, a first-of-its-kind local laboratory designed to conceive, test, and pilot new forms of tourism experiences tailored to the island’s specificities.
Driven by the Djerba Destination Management Organization (DMO) with support from Swiss cooperation, this ambitious project aims to transform the region into a living testing ground for tourism. The Lab operates with an overall budget exceeding 360,000 Tunisian dinars, allocated for developing innovative projects over an 18-month period.
The initiative’s core objective is to foster sustainable tourism solutions deeply rooted in Djerba’s cultural heritage, local crafts, and island identity. A key component is the active involvement of local stakeholders, entrepreneurs, creators, and community members.
According to Azza Haj Hassan, Communications Officer for the Tunisia Tourism Lab, the project is a strategic tool for reimagining Djerba’s tourism through a collaborative, experimental, and innovative approach. “It is designed to meet the evolving expectations of visitors while preserving local resources,” Haj Hassan stated in an interview with our correspondent, Mimoun Tounsi.
