The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio met with resounding applause on Thursday at the Roman amphitheatre in the Tunisian town of El Jem.
The concert was held as part of the 33rd edition of the Festival International de Musique Symphonique d’El Jem.
The multi-ethnic orchestra is the largest of its kind in Europe and received a warm welcome from the large audience, which responded with enthusiasm to the variegated musical line-up.
The songs were a mix of Tunisian, Egyptian and South American melodies with a colourful version of the whimsical ‘Caravan Petrol’ by Renato Carosone as an homage to Neapolitan culture.
The Orchestra di Piazza Vittorio mixes the lyrics and musical languages of its musicians, with its pillar being that mixing cultures produces beauty. The show was made possible by support from the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Tunis and the Italian embassy as part of the cultural program entitled “Italia, Culture, Mediterraneo” area to strengthen intercultural dialogue and promote Italy as a bridge between cultures.
