UN envoy says violence still looms large over Libya

UN Special Envpy for Libya Ghassan Salame said Wednesday that the threat of violence remained in Libya.

He was speaking in a videoconference during a Security Council meeting. Salame underscored that armed factions were making shows of strength recently in Tripoli, along the country’s border with Tunisia and in Derna, and that they fight in residential areas with no concern for the civilians living therein.

Salame noted that he was in Tunisia because violence near the Tripoli airport had prevented him from reaching the Libya city and that the arms embargo was more important than ever.

He added that news of a large load of explosives intercepted by the Greek Coast Guard was alarming and that a country with ”20 million weapons” does not need any more.
