Qatar Charity, Hedi Raies Institute and Jendouba University Hospital to Perform 200 Cataract Surgeries

Qatar Charity – Tunisia Office on Monday signed a cooperation agreement with the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology in Tunis to implement a healthcare initiative providing cataract surgery to 100 patients. The agreement was signed at the institute’s headquarters in Bab Saadoun, Tunis, in the presence of Qatar’s Ambassador to Tunisia, Zayed bin Saeed Al Khayarin; Director of Development Operations at Qatar Charity, Ibrahim Abdulrahman Al Janahi; Director of Qatar Charity’s Tunisia Office, Karima Belbasmi; Director General of Public Health Facilities at Tunisia’s Ministry of Health, Imad Mallakh; Director of the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology, Rim Faqih; and a number of the institute’s senior officials.
Under the same initiative, an additional 100 cataract surgeries will be performed at Jendouba University Hospital, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to 200 patients. The project will provide patients with access to specialized surgical care and offer them an opportunity to regain their vision and improve their quality of life.
The initiative forms part of Qatar Charity’s humanitarian and healthcare efforts in support of Tunisia’s health sector, while also strengthening cooperation between healthcare institutions and humanitarian organizations. It seeks to expand access to specialized medical services, particularly for patients facing difficulties in obtaining necessary surgical treatment.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Qatar’s Ambassador to Tunisia Zayed bin Saeed Al Khayarin said he had witnessed the ongoing development of Tunisia’s healthcare sector. He also expressed his appreciation to the Tunisian authorities, led by President Kais Saied, for the facilities and support extended to Qatar Charity in carrying out its activities in Tunisia.
The ambassador praised the capabilities and expertise of Tunisian medical professionals, noting their widely recognized high level of competence. He reaffirmed that Qatar would continue to stand alongside its brothers and sisters in Tunisia and support initiatives that serve the Tunisian people.
For his part, Qatar Charity’s Director of Development Operations Ibrahim Abdulrahman Al Janahi said the initiative forms part of the organization’s broader healthcare efforts in several countries. He noted that Qatar Charity supports a wide range of medical interventions, including catheterization procedures, open-heart surgeries and other specialized treatments aimed at improving access to essential healthcare.
Rim Faqih, Director of the Hedi Raies Institute of Ophthalmology, said the initiative further builds on the achievements and development work accomplished by the institute over recent years. She expressed her appreciation to all parties involved in making the agreement possible, describing it as a valuable addition to the institute’s ongoing efforts to expand and enhance its services.
Faqih also thanked Qatar Charity and the State of Qatar for their support, which she said would directly benefit Tunisian citizens in need of specialized ophthalmological care.
