Tunisia’s Ministry of Agriculture is overseeing more than 90 major projects listed on the Government Presidency’s project monitoring platform, including 67 classified as large-scale projects receiving substantial funding, according to Mehdi Khlass, the ministry’s Director-General of Finance, Investment and Professional Structures.
Speaking on Express FM’s Agrihour program, Khlass said most of the projects are in the water sector. They include major dams, drinking water supply projects, desalination plants and water transfer schemes, as well as projects supervised by the Directorate-General of Rural Engineering, particularly those related to drinking water distribution in rural areas.
Khlass said the ministry’s allocated budget totals 2.064 billion dinars. The “Water” program receives the largest share, with 1.251 billion dinars earmarked for it.
The water program covers dam projects, irrigation areas, the maintenance and upkeep of water infrastructure, and major projects carried out by the National Water Distribution Utility, he explained.
Agricultural production ranks second in allocated funding with 354 million dinars, followed by the development of forest and agricultural land program, which has an allocation of 235 million dinars.
