Tunisia Lands Major MEDUSA Submarine Cable, Boosting Digital Sovereignty

The MEDUSA submarine cable, a strategic 8,700-kilometer project, made landfall in Bizerte on November 1, 2025. The cable, supported by the European Union and implemented by AFR-IX Telecom, will connect Tunisia to several countries across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East.

The CEO of Tunisie Telecom, Lassaad Ben Dhiab, hailed the landing as a “major technological milestone.” He stated that the state-of-the-art infrastructure will multiply Tunisia’s international bandwidth capacity by eight, enhancing the reliability and security of data exchange.

Ben Dhiab emphasized that MEDUSA is an “essential backbone” for supporting future technologies like cloud computing and artificial intelligence. He said it positions Tunisia as a key regional connectivity hub and a central player in Mediterranean digital sovereignty.

The cable is expected to directly benefit businesses, public institutions, and citizens by improving service quality, reducing latency, and increasing network resilience. It will also support the development of innovative digital services, including data centers and smart cities.

For Tunisie Telecom, which already owns stakes in the Hannibal and SEA-ME-WE 4 cables, MEDUSA solidifies its role as a leading connectivity provider in North Africa and a builder of sovereign, high-performance digital infrastructure.
