On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, Tunisian cinemas officially welcomed the highly anticipated release of Barzakh, the latest film by Tunisian director Kaïs Mejri, starring and produced by renowned actress Fatma Nasser. The film, which had its special pre-screening at the Cité de la Culture in Tunis, stands out as a milestone in Tunisian cinema, blending symbolism with science fiction and taking audiences on a journey that transcends earth and space, reality and the unseen.
The movie is set to expand its screenings soon to Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Canada, and France, highlighting its growing Arab and international reach. Critics have described Barzakh as more than just a film — a bold artistic venture that opens conversations about hidden human struggles and universal values.
Alongside Fatma Nasser, the cast features some of Tunisia’s most talented actors, including Jamal Eddine Medeni, Mohamed Sayari, Oussama Kouchkar, Nour Beltaieb, and Khouloud Jelidi. For Nasser, who also produced the film, Barzakh is the result of a “challenging journey,” particularly since it was completed without official funding, relying heavily on visual effects.
Director Kaïs Mejri describes Barzakh as “a true risk in both form and content,” yet one that leaves a lasting mark, inviting audiences to reflect on the symbolic meaning of the term — the threshold between life and death, between the known and the unknown, between light and darkness.
