Sharm El-Sheikh Youth Theater Festival Unveils Poster for Landmark 10th Edition Honoring Ilham Shaheen

The Sharm El-Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival has unveiled the official poster for its 10th edition, kicking off what promises to be a landmark celebration of a decade dedicated to young theatrical talent. Under the presidency of festival founder and director Mazen El-Gharabawy, this year’s edition reaffirms the festival’s enduring commitment to peace, creativity, and cultural exchange through the power of youth theater.

A Tribute to Ilham Shaheen

Marking its 10th anniversary, the 2025 edition is dedicated to acclaimed Egyptian actress Ilham Shaheen, in recognition of her bold and transformative contributions to Arab and Egyptian theater. Known for her genre-defying performances and unwavering cultural engagement, Shaheen is celebrated as a figure who challenged theatrical norms and elevated the role of women on stage.

A Visual Celebration

The festival’s official poster, designed by emerging artist Ali Abdel Rahman, sets the tone for this milestone edition. Rich in symbolism, it features a woman draped in classical attire crowned with a golden halo—evoking the timeless elegance and spiritual grandeur of the stage. Dominated by a regal color palette of gold, black, and red, the design balances the gravitas of legacy with the energy of celebration. At its heart is the number “10”, accompanied by the festival’s enduring slogan: “Theater for Humanity and Peace.”

Honoring a Legacy: Samia Ayoub

This edition also pays heartfelt homage to the late iconic artist Samia Ayoub, the festival’s first honorary president and a guiding spirit since its inception. Ayoub, revered for her deep artistic integrity and commitment to Arab theater, played a vital role in shaping the festival’s identity and mission.

Her support was more than symbolic—it was foundational. A spiritual compass for the event, Ayoub’s unwavering belief in the power of youth and theater as tools for cultural renewal continues to resonate through each edition. A special tribute will be held in her memory, celebrating her lasting legacy and profound influence.

Backed by the Egyptian State

Held under the patronage of Egypt’s Ministry of Culture, led by Dr. Ahmed Fouad Henno, the festival benefits from strong institutional support, including that of South Sinai Governorate and its governor, Major General Dr. Khaled Mubarak. This collaboration reflects broader national efforts to link culture, youth development, and tourism—particularly in the vibrant resort city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Leadership and Vision

Since its founding, director Mazen El-Gharabawy has spearheaded the festival’s evolution into a prominent international platform for youth theater. Through tireless advocacy and an inclusive artistic vision, El-Gharabawy has positioned Sharm El-Sheikh as a nexus for theatrical innovation and intercultural dialogue.

Working alongside him is Dr. Ingy El-Bestawy, the festival’s director, whose efforts have been instrumental in establishing the event as a leading destination for emerging theater artists worldwide. Producer Hesham Suleiman continues to chair the festival’s High Committee, lending strategic oversight and support to its future growth.

Looking Back, Looking Forward

The festival’s ninth edition, held in November 2024, was dedicated to the late master director Galal El Sharkawy and drew enthusiastic participation from young talents across continents. From workshops to performances, it underscored the festival’s role as both an incubator for new voices and a bridge between cultures.

Now in its 10th year, the Sharm El-Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival remains more than a showcase—it is a movement. A movement rooted in the belief that theater is not just an art form, but a force for peace, dialogue, and the empowerment of youth across borders.
