On the occasion of Earth Day, the British Embassy in Tunis organised a virtual session on climate challenges in Tunisia ahead of COP26, with the participation of UK Ambassador to Tunisia Edward Oakden, COP26 Regional Ambassador, Janet Rogan, COP26 negotiator at the Tunisian Ministry of environment, Mohamed Zmerli and Eco heroes Winner, Fatma Amri.
Fatma Amri is from Gabes, reportedly the most polluted region in Tunisia. Her ECOGAB project promotes bicycle use over car use to minimize emissions. It also encourages young people to recycle by delivering training sessions on decorating and selling used items.
The participants discussed climate change’s threats to economic development and poverty alleviation. Tunisia is now facing climate change threats, which include temperature increases, rising sea levels and escalating extreme weather phenomena, including urban flooding, river and coastal flooding.
The COP26 summit will represent an international platform for governments, decision makers and world leaders to come together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.
The UK is working closely with the Tunisian government and joining forces with civil society, companies and people on the frontline of climate change to inspire climate action ahead of COP26.
In this context, the UK Government set in law world’s most ambitious climate change target, cutting emissions by 78% by 2035 compared to 1990 levels.
For the first time, UK’s Sixth Carbon Budget will incorporate the UK’s share of international aviation and shipping emissions. This would bring the UK more than three-quarters of the way to net zero by 2050.
