Tourism has exceptional potential for development, says EU Ambassador to Tunisia

Tunisia’s tourism sector has “exceptional potential” to become a key driver of the country’s economic growth, said the European Union Ambassador to Tunisia, Giuseppe Perrone, in an interview with TAP news agency..

“My trips to Tunisia have revealed fascinating opportunities. I have been able to see projects funded by the EU”, said the diplomatic representative, explaining that he was able to see the progress of the five-year project of EU support to the Tunisian tourism sector called Tounes Wijhetouna, in support of sustainable tourism, which enhances the cultural and artisanal riches of the country.

With a contribution of 5,6 million euros, financed by the European Neighbourhood Instrument, Wijhetouna Towers intends to adapt the administrative and regulatory context and support mechanisms to the needs of tourism diversification.

The program supports the various Tunisian ministries and implementing actors in the activities of animation and interinstitutional coordination according to international standards and in line with sustainable tourism development in Tunisia.

The institutional actions of support and promotion of the sustainable tourism sector implemented by the project contribute to regional development and the economic and social inclusion of men, women and young people of both sexes and people living with disabilities.

Perrone called it “a crucial programme that strengthens Tunisia’s tourism offering and develops new attractions”. The ambassador highlighted the “extraordinary heritage and cultural identity” that Tunisia possesses. “We need to look beyond beach tourism”, added Perrone, noting that “the country has countless untapped historical and cultural sites waiting to be developed”. The EU ambassador highlighted the ongoing cooperation with Tunisian authorities and civil society organisations on multiple projects, confirming the joint commitment to the country’s development.

“Both Tunisia and the EU have everything to gain from expanding cooperation in all sectors. Our nations are deeply important to each other, especially in these difficult times. Tunisia can always count on the EU as its loyal partner”, concluded Giuseppe Perrone.
