Japanese Tour Operator Launches Exclusive Cultural Tours to Tunisia

Japan’s Hankyu Travel will inaugurate a new series of immersive package tours exclusively for Japanese tourists to Tunisia starting in February. The initiative, announced via the Tunisian Embassy in Tokyo, aims to tap into a market seeking deep cultural and heritage experiences.

The meticulously curated itineraries, spanning 8 to 11 days, are designed to showcase Tunisia’s premier historical, cultural, and natural sites. Tours will traverse the country from north to south, beginning in Greater Tunis with visits to the capital, the ancient ruins of Carthage, and the iconic blue-and-white village of Sidi Bou Saïd. The journey continues to the holy city of Kairouan, a cornerstone of Islamic heritage, and the UNESCO-listed Roman amphitheater of El Jem, before heading to the coastal city of Sousse.

The southern desert region forms a central highlight, featuring excursions into Saharan landscapes, oasis discoveries, and the troglodyte dwellings of Matmata. The itinerary concludes on the island of Djerba, renowned for both its cultural tapestry and seaside resorts.

Strategic Timing for Tourism Recovery
Departures are strategically scheduled across the spring months—February through May—to distribute visitor traffic during Tunisia’s lower and mid-season periods. This spacing is seen as a tactical effort to stabilize year-round tourism flows.

Industry analysts view Hankyu Travel’s launch as a significant indicator of sustained Japanese interest in Tunisia’s millennia-old heritage and diverse landscapes. The move is expected to help diversify Tunisia’s tourist demographics and bolster the sector’s recovery in 2026, amid intensifying competition among Mediterranean destinations.
