On September 23, 2025, the world celebrated the 10th Ayurveda Day, casting an international spotlight on an ancient system of healing that is deeply rooted in India’s cultural soul. More than just a medical practice, Ayurveda—”the science of life”—is a living heritage that continues to offer profound wisdom for modern well-being, and its principles are finding a resonant home here in Tunisia.
This year’s celebration held special significance. In March 2025, the Government of India officially designated September 23 as National Ayurveda Day, moving it from its previous alignment with the Dhanteras festival. This strategic shift ensures global consistency and carries deep symbolic weight, as the date coincides with the autumnal equinox—a time of perfect balance that mirrors Ayurveda’s core philosophy of harmony between body, mind, and soul.
Between Tradition and Science
With its origins in the Vedas, Ayurveda views health as a dynamic state of balance between the individual and their environment. Its personalized approach, guided by the framework of the three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—encompasses diet, medicinal plants, massage, and daily routines.
Today, this timeless knowledge is gaining modern validation. Recognized by the World Health Organization as a complete traditional health system, Ayurveda is now integrated into academic curricula in India and beyond. Growing scientific research underscores its relevance in preventing and managing chronic diseases, emphasizing a proactive partnership with nature’s intelligence.
A Tunisian Wellness Journey
In Tunisia, interest in Ayurveda has been steadily growing, a journey that began in earnest in 2019 when Tunisia was first represented in the Ayurveda Ambassadors Tour, with Nihel Bchini selected as an Ayurveda Ambassador. This initiative, led by India’s Ministry of AYUSH, planted the first seeds.
The global pandemic became an unexpected catalyst. “Ayurveda felt like a lifeline during the pandemic,” shared one Tunisian participant. “Simple tips such as warm water, herbal teas, and breathing practices helped me feel calmer and healthier at home.” Online workshops and consultations provided natural tools for managing stress and immunity, while local wellness centers began introducing Abhyanga massages, detox programs, and diets inspired by Ayurvedic principles.
Ayurveda & Tourism Day 2025: A New Chapter in Cooperation
The year 2025 marked a significant milestone. On September 23, aligning National Ayurveda Day with World Tourism Day, the Embassy of India in Tunis, with the support of the Ministry of AYUSH and Tunisian partners, hosted “Ayurveda & Tourism Day 2025” under the theme ‘Ayurveda for People and Planet’.
This event was more than a cultural showcase; it was a dynamic platform where heritage met economic opportunity. The gathering brought together policymakers, wellness professionals, travel agencies, and investors, featuring hands-on demonstrations and expert insights. It positioned Ayurveda as a potential engine for Tunisia’s wellness tourism sector and strengthened the bonds of cooperation between our two nations.
A Global Movement, A Shared Future
India is actively integrating Ayurveda into its global health diplomacy. This includes signing 15 international MoUs and partnering with the WHO to develop global benchmarks, standardized terminologies, and training modules for traditional medicine. The goal is to mainstream therapies like Panchakarma and Yoga into globally recognized health systems.
Today, India is emerging as a global hub for wellness tourism, and Tunisia, with its own rich traditions of herbal healing, finds a natural resonance with Ayurveda. Simple, shared practices—like drinking warm water, using turmeric, or honoring seasonal foods—form a common ground.
Ultimately, Ayurveda is a living philosophy, an invitation to listen to our bodies and live in harmony with nature’s cycles. It represents a vibrant, growing bridge between India and Tunisia, one that promises not only greater individual well-being but also a fruitful future of shared knowledge and partnership.
