Algeria will soon be exporting electricity to Libya through Tunisia, Algerian Energy Minister Mustapha Guitoni said on the sidelines of a working visit to Khenchela, adding that the export of electrical energy is part of the program of Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika who wants to export Algerian energy once the country expects to become self-sufficient by the end of this year, ANSAmed reports.
”Negotiations are ongoing with Tunisia, which will benefit from some 400 megawatts and with Libya”, the minister said. The export of electricity will go towards these two countries, starting from the cities of Batna and Khenchela. And a new power plant worth 421,5 megawatts was inaugurated yesterday in Khenchela and it was confirmed that work to build another plant in R’mila able to produce 1,266,7 megawatts, which can be extended to 1,600, has been confirmed, according to the source.
Speaking about electrical energy, Guitoinu recalled that the president’s plan includes the production of 22,000 megawatts of electricity starting from solar power by 2020. This program has so far enabled the production of 400 megawatts and a tender will be launched by the end of the year to introduce in the market an additional 120 megawatts by private investors through the construction and installation of solar panels, the minister said.
