Tunisia Accelerates Digital Transformation in Higher Education with Huawei Infrastructure Upgrade

Tunisia is solidifying its position as a leading digital innovation hub in North Africa by undertaking a major modernization of its higher education infrastructure. In a strategic move to bolster online learning and research, the Khawarizmi Computing Center (CCK), operating under the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, has partnered with global technology giant Huawei to overhaul the national university network.

The initiative comes as universities across Africa face mounting pressure from the rapid adoption of remote learning, cloud services, and AI-driven research platforms. Established in 1976, the CCK is spearheading the effort to provide universities with the necessary bandwidth, low latency, and robust cybersecurity required for modern digital education.

Modernizing the Backbone of Education

The core of the project involves the deployment of Huawei CloudStack, a platform designed to support virtual data centers. This technology enables institutions to host essential applications—ranging from video conferencing and cloud desktops to ERP services—while centralizing management and enhancing data protection.

To address the complexities of managing distributed campuses, the CCK has also integrated Huawei’s SD-WAN technology. This upgrade expands fiber-optic connectivity between universities, offering network administrators greater visibility and improved traffic optimization across wide-area networks.

Furthermore, the implementation of Huawei’s iMaster NCE-Campus platform allows IT teams to centrally monitor and troubleshoot campus-wide networks, significantly reducing operational complexity. The project also includes comprehensive upgrades to network security and disaster recovery systems, ensuring service continuity and the protection of sensitive research data.

Bridging the ICT Skills Gap

Beyond hardware and infrastructure, the partnership focuses heavily on human capital development. Huawei and Tunisian universities are expanding cooperation on ICT training and cybersecurity education. This includes the establishment of specialized cybersecurity laboratories and training programs aligned with the HCIA Security certification, designed to equip students with skills relevant to security engineering and other high-demand ICT roles.

The collaboration extends to fostering entrepreneurship through initiatives such as the Huawei ICT Competition, Seeds for the Future, and the Spark Competition, encouraging student innovation and startup creation.

Driving Economic Growth Through Technology

The upgraded infrastructure is already facilitating the deployment of smart classrooms, intelligent collaboration tools, and advanced campus security systems across Tunisian universities.

By reducing operational complexity and improving digital access, Tunisia aims to strengthen its economic development and cement its status as a regional technology hub. As the education sector prepares for a future dominated by AI, cloud computing, and data-intensive research, these investments ensure that Tunisian institutions are equipped to meet both current needs and future demands.
