Parliament Approves Five Solar Power Plant Concessions in Major Renewable Energy Push

The Assembly of the People’s Representatives (ARP) has given its green light to five concession agreements for electricity generation from photovoltaic solar plants, marking a significant step in the country’s energy transition strategy.

The bills were approved during a plenary session chaired by Speaker Brahim Bouderbala, with varying majorities ranging from 70 to 75 votes in favor, approximately 30 to 33 votes against, and a number of abstentions. The session was attended by Minister of Economy and Planning Samir Abdelhafidh and Secretary of State for Energy Transition Wael Chouchane.

The approved concessions cover the construction of five solar power plants in the towns of Khebna, Mazzouna (in the Sidi Bouzid governorate), Ksar, Sagdoud, and Menzel Habib.

Government officials said the measures are designed to strengthen Tunisia’s energy security and sovereignty, reducing dependence on energy imports while containing electricity production costs compared to imported natural gas.

The initiative falls under the national energy transition strategy, which aims to increase the share of renewable energy to 35 percent of the country’s energy mix by 2030, up from the current level of just 5 percent. Authorities also highlighted the potential for regional development and job creation as part of the solar power plant rollouts.
