Cairo Film Festival Ushers in New Cinematic Era with Groundbreaking ‘CAIRO’S XR’ Section

In a move signaling a bold step into the future of storytelling, the 46th Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF) officially launched “CAIRO’S XR,” a first-of-its-kind section dedicated to new media and immersive technologies. The exclusive launch was inaugurated by the festival’s President Hussein Fahmy.

CAIRO’S XR is designed as an advanced global platform, showcasing cutting-edge work in extended reality (XR) films, interactive experiences, artificial intelligence-driven projects, and narrative games. The initiative aims to provide a stage for international artists to redefine the boundaries of cinematic narrative.

“These innovative projects represent the future of cinema,” stated President Hussein Fahmy, expressing his enthusiasm for the new section. He emphasized that the fusion of art and technology showcased in CAIRO’S XR reflects the festival’s deep commitment to fostering creativity and embracing cinematic innovation.

Echoing this sentiment, the festival’s Artistic Director, Mohamed Tarek, described the launch as a “significant leap” for the CIFF. “We are combining technology and art to present immersive, highly innovative projects, from virtual reality films to AI applications,” Tarek said. “We take great pride in launching this section, which firmly places the festival on the map of modern cinematic experiences.”

The section will specifically feature completed works or advanced prototypes making their Middle East and North Africa premieres, focusing on novel storytelling that seamlessly integrates artistic vision with technological immersion.

Dr. Nora Kaheil, Director of the New Media Program, explained that CAIRO’S XR is a unique addition to the festival’s lineup. “It opens doors to new opportunities for innovation in digital cinematic storytelling,” Dr. Kaheil noted. “This platform connects audiences with works that blend artistic creativity with immersive technologies, offering a glimpse into the next chapter of narrative art.”
