The Embassy of India in Tunis marked the 156th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi with a ceremony of tribute and academic partnership on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at the Faculty of Letters, Arts and Humanities of Manouba.
The event, commemorating the life of the apostle of peace and non-violence, centered on a floral tribute at the bust of Gandhi installed at the Faculty. The ceremony was attended by nearly 100 people, including mission officials, faculty administration, professors, students, and members of the Indian community.
Ambassador of India to Tunisia, Dr. Devyani Uttam Khobragade, was joined by the Vice-Deans of the Faculty, Ms. Thouraya Ben Amor and Mr. Ali Hanafi, in laying the first wreaths at the bust. They were followed by a procession of professors and students, each paying their respects to the Father of the Indian Nation.

In a significant move to deepen cultural and educational ties, Ambassador Khobragade used the occasion to announce several key initiatives. She formally gifted Arabic versions of Gandhi’s biography to university students and invited them to explore higher education opportunities in India through ICCR scholarships.
Looking to the future of Indo-Tunisian academic exchange, the Ambassador unveiled ambitious plans for the faculty. “The Embassy announced the donation of books to the Faculty of Letters and its library, and the establishment of an India Chair at the Faculty,” she stated, signaling a new chapter in academic collaboration.
The event served as a powerful reminder of the enduring global relevance of Gandhi’s principles. The celebration reinforced the shared values of truth (Satya), non-violence (Ahimsa), and peaceful coexistence, which continue to act as a guiding light for humanity and fortify the bonds of friendship between India and Tunisia.
