Tunisia ranks first in the world in terms of the area devoted to organic olive groves, out of a list of 30 organic olive-growing countries, according to the report “The World of Organic Agriculture: Statistics & Emerging Trends 2019”, published on February 13, 2019 by the Swiss Organic Agriculture Research Institute and the International Federation of Organic Agriculture Movements (IFOAM).
The areas devoted to organic olive groves in Tunisia amount to 255 thousand hectares (ha), compared to 235 thousand ha in Italy, which ranks second, and 195 thousand ha in Spain, which ranks third.
According to the same report, Tunisia also ranks at the top of the African ranking in terms of areas devoted to organic agriculture with 376 thousand ha, followed by Tanzania (278 thousand ha) and Uganda (262 thousand ha).
Globally, Tunisia ranks 24th out of 181 countries in terms of organic surface areas, gaining 23 places. Australia leads the world in this ranking, followed by Argentina (2nd) and China (3rd).
The report refers to statistics for the year 2017.
