The National Tunisian Tourism Office (ONTT) has signed a cooperation agreement with the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), paving the way for a gradual overhaul of the country’s tourism model based on internationally recognized sustainability criteria.
The memorandum of understanding was finalized on the sidelines of a national workshop co-organized by the Ministry of Tourism and the ONTT. Under the deal, the GSTC will provide structured support to the Tunisian office as it develops a roadmap aligned with the Council’s standards.
This alignment will cover staff training, the provision of specialized resources, and support for tourism operators seeking certification from GSTC-accredited bodies. The agreement also aims to bring Tunisia’s regulatory framework closer to current international benchmarks.
As part of the accord, the ONTT has committed to taking stock of existing tourism initiatives across all regions, identifying gaps in quality and compliance, and offering targeted assistance to industry professionals—including small businesses, guesthouses, local guides, and providers of community-based experiences.
