In the latest Global Knowledge Index, Mauritius emerged as Africa’s sole representative to meet the global average, placing 58th worldwide with a score of 41.6. The island nation’s performance was bolstered by strong foundational education and robust scores in information technology and governance, though its research and innovation sector showed significant room for improvement, scoring only 16.4.
Following closely behind, Tunisia secured its position as one of Africa’s leading knowledge economies, ranking directly after Mauritius alongside Seychelles and Egypt. The results highlight a sharp continental divide, with these North African nations pulling ahead while the majority of African countries continue to trail the global index.
The findings underscore Tunisia’s relative strength in the regional landscape, even as the report points to broader challenges in research and innovation development across the continent.
