The National Centre for Cinema and Image in Tunisia announced that it has joined the global movement to promote Palestinian voices and refute false narratives by hosting ‘Palestine Film Days Around the World’.
As part of these events, the Cinema Library has scheduled the screening of two films on November 2, coinciding with the commemoration of the anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. The first is ‘The Wanted 18’ directed by Amer Choumli and Paul Cowan at the Taher Shari’a Hall (18:30 pm), while the second is titled ‘Why Resistance?’ Directed by Christian Ghazi, it will be held at Cine 350 from 7.30 pm. Admission is free for both screenings.
Within the framework of Palestine Film Days around the world, more than 320 spaces have been scheduled in 44 countries in Europe, Asia and Africa (including America, China, Tunisia, Yemen, Jordan,…). To spread Palestinian stories to the world, this year’s list includes 8 feature films.
A growing number of activists and cultural organisers are renewing their coalition in support of these rights. To date, 320 screenings of eight films have been confirmed in 44 countries and more than 150 cities (from New York to Nairobi to Tokyo).
Partners are hosting screenings and discussions, raising funds for support and relief efforts in Palestine and Lebanon, and have volunteered to translate the films into Greek, Portuguese, Estonian and other languages.
For the cause, and in an initiative that breaks the mould of traditional distribution chains, copyright holders, producers, distributors and filmmakers have agreed to make their films available for screening for free.
More than a year after the start of the war on Gaza, the carnage continues and the horrors intensify. Despite all the killing, the dehumanisation of Palestinians is intensifying as world leaders, the media and major social media outlets continue to blur the narrative of truth. The Israeli occupation’s aggression extends to Lebanon, killing civilians in large numbers and destroying civilian infrastructure.
The Balfour Declaration was a public statement issued by the British Government in 1917 during the First World War announcing its support for the establishment of a “national home for the Jewish people” in Palestine, then an Ottoman region with a small minority Jewish population. The declaration was contained in a letter dated 2 November 1917 from the United Kingdom’s Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour to Lord Rothschild, a leader of the British Jewish community, for transmission to the Zionist Federation of Great Britain and Ireland. The text of the declaration was published in the press on 9 November 1917.
